Emotional Intelligence & Resilience
understanding emotionally driven
responses and developing resilience
Emotions are the essence of feeling human. They go hand in hand with thoughts to drive behaviour and allow people to achieve great goals. The ability to trust your emotions, to show empathy, to feel what you are truly feeling and not be ruled by your emotions is the essence of being emotionally intelligent.
Emotional intelligence is about understanding the different emotions, why they occur, and having strategies to manage them in a positive and productive way.

What is Emotional Intelligence?
Emotional Intelligence describes an ability, capacity, or skill to perceive, assess, and manage the emotions of yourself, of others, and of groups. It could be traced back to Darwin’s work on the importance of emotional expression for survival and adaptation (1872). It is a term that was first described by Wayne Payne in 1985 and the definition of EI is constantly developing.
“The emotional brain responds to an event more quickly than the thinking brain." Daniel Goleman
In Working with Emotional Intelligence (1998)
Daniel Goleman claimed EI to be the largest single predictor of success in the
workplace. His model includes four areas:
Self-awareness
Self-management
Social awareness
Relationship management

“Many thanks for the Emotional Intelligence course - most thought provoking and useful, and it was good to see you again. I've already successfully used the '6 basic emotions' faces to support coverage of emotional intelligence in a course that I run and I'll be using it again tomorrow with a group of Directors. The other aspects that we covered in Kendal will imminently be very useful. The 'orienting to emotions' activity will be helpful, as I'm keen to ensure that the goals my clients set should include emotions and behaviours, not just procedural, business or technical aspects of their work. "
